Q&A: How close should I plant my Japanese Maple to my house?
Q. How far from the house should I plant and Emperor 1 Japanese maple, so that I do not have to worry about the roots causing a problem with the house foundation?
A. Japanese maples do well when carefully pruned so can be planted just a metre from the house. The north and east sides of the house are ideal locations for Japanese maples (morning sun only). Many cultivars do not grow taller than eight feet and so will fit nicely in a corner next to the house, underneath a window or eve, or beneath a medium to large shade tree. Be sure to add a thick layer of mulch after planting and protect it from the cold winter winds.
