Urgent appeal for Jamaica disaster relief following Hurricane Melissa
Many Canadian employers benefit directly from the hard work and dedication of Jamaican nationals. An appeal is being made to support immediate workers and the wider relief effort in Jamaica following the recent catastrophic passage of Hurricane Melissa — a Category 5 storm that has caused widespread and devastating destruction across the island.
The damage is profound, with reports indicating catastrophic flooding, numerous landslides and massive infrastructural damage. There is particular concern about the agricultural sector, which has been severely impacted. Banana, coffee, sugarcane and other vital crops have suffered extensive losses, which threaten the long-term food security and economic stability of the entire nation. Support for the rebuilding of Jamaica's agriculture sector is a critical priority for the island's recovery.
Please consider providing all possible direct support-financial or otherwise-to the Jamaican farm workers currently in your employ, many of whom have family and homes that have been severely affected.
